Musical treat boosts ‘Grand Tour’ attractions at Compton Verney 29 - 30 January 2005

A brand new musical entertainment has been added to the attractions in store for visitors heading for ‘The Grand Tour’ at Compton Verney over the weekend, 29 – 30 January. Patric Schmid, a Governor of Compton Verney and Artistic Director of Opera Rara, the leading bel canto record label, has devised a programme of songs popular in the parlours and salons of 19th century Europe that would have been enjoyed by intrepid travellers sampling the cultural delights of a ‘Grand Tour’ of the Continent. Gathering round the piano at Compton Verney will be five talented singers from the Royal Northern College of Music: Michaela Bloom and Gillian Ramm, sopranos, Dominica Matthews, mezzo soprano, Chris Turner, tenor and John Malloy, baritone, all of whom are Peter Moores Foundation (PMF) Scholars. The pianists are Robin Humphreys (Saturday) and Kevin Thraves (Sunday). Items will be introduced informally and include songs by Benedict, an Irish composer who wrote ‘Lily of Killarney’ and worked out his apprenticeship in Italy, by Donizetti, Mercadante and Pacini, and by Costa ( Virtually unknown now but “a Neapolitan kid who came to the UK and became the first matinee idol conductor... his is the prettiest song.” Patric Schmid ).

The musical entertainment will start at 2.30pm each day and last for approximately 90 minutes including an interval.

The theme of the Grand Tour weekend has been inspired by Compton Verney’s collection of magnificent Neapolitan paintings from 1600 - 1800. In addition to the two musical events, there are other activities catering for all ages including performances by Playbox Theatre of a new work bringing to life Italy’s commedia dell’arte, an opportunity for children to create Vesuvius, a walking tour of the grounds (Sunday only) led by Richard Gray, Director of Compton Verney, and an opportunity to win a trip to Naples.

All events are included in the admission price of £6 adults, £4 concs, with season ticket holders and children up to 16, free.
