Christopher Columbus
Forget History! The operetta Christopher Columbus is a pastiche, arranged from Offenbach's forgotten works. Don White, who wrote the book and the lyrics, depicts Columbus as a rascal who has found that "the secret of seduction" is "one little thing, a wedding ring." Unfortunately, he has been handing out rings wholesale. Columbus has three wives and a fiancée... and they all have “just found out”.
Patric Schmid, Artistic Director, Opera Rara '...the marriage of Offenbach's exuberant music and Don White's witty English text was an immediate success. (Who could resist waltzing cannibals?)' |
