'The performance itself is an undoubted achievement, as is the recording, again helped by the Peter Moores Foundation.

Alun Francis conducts with conviction, the Geoffrey Mitchell Choir make an excellent contribution and the soloists put heart and soul into their work... An inspired piece of casting is that of Graham Clark as the aged father (conventionally a bass, but here a tenor role), and the most thoroughly enjoyable singing comes from Della Jones.'
Fanfare

'I have gotten so much enjoyment from this recording, and I feel that Opera Rara deserves so much support for its untiring efforts on behalf of such works... Maria Padilla was premiered but two years before the last opera he was to complete before he fell victim to madness... it is a fascinating work which, on close inspection seems to indicate that Donizetti was undergoing a period of musico-dramatic development of his own, and had he continued to compose, might well have anticipated some of the advances Verdi was ultimately to effect. It is, in short, a fine if uneven work, unduly neglected (its last traceable performance before Opera Rara's 1973 exhumation was more than a century before) and fully worthy of revival.'
